He was one of the first Kazakh writers who actively used prose in his works, expanding the genre boundaries of Kazakh literature. Abai was also a composer. He did not write down songs to his own words or translations of Russian and European poets. Popular among the people, they were recorded after the revolution by Bimboes A.E., Zataevich A.V., Khamidi L.A., Zhubanov A.K., Erzakovich B.G. He created about two dozen melodies that combine features of Kazakh and Russian melodies. Among his songs, "Kozimnin karasy" ("You are the pupil of my eyes", translated by Maria Petrovykh) became a folk song.
