Dee Dee Bridgewater (real name Dennis Garrett) is an American jazz singer, composer, and actress. Born May 27, 1950, in Memphis, Tennessee, USA, she is known as one of the finest jazz vocalists of her generation. She works in the jazz, R&B, and disco genres. In 1975, she won the Tony Award for Best Supporting Actress in a Musical for her role as Glinda the Good Witch in The Wiz, a loose theatrical adaptation of The Wonderful Wizard of Oz. She has appeared on recordings by artists including Stanley Clark, Roland Kirk, Frank Foster, Buddy Terry, and Norman Connors. She won the Grand Prize at the 1990 Sanremo Festival. In 2002, she presented This Is New, dedicated to the German composer Kurt Weill, and in 2005, her first album of songs in French was released. In 2007, she released the album Red Earth. In 2025, she released the album Elemental, a collaboration with pianist Bill Charlap.
