He graduated from the pop department of the Music College of the Leningrad Conservatory (now the N. A. Rimsky-Korsakov St. Petersburg College of Music). From 1975 to 1976, he was a member of Georgy Ordanovsky's Leningrad band Rossiyane (The Russians). In 1976, he joined the band Aprel (April), which was renamed Zemlyane (The Earthlings) in the fall of 1978. He later participated in the bands Soyuz, Kakadu, NEP, and Alisa. He created his own instrumental project, Romanoff, where he released his own compositions.
