VIA "Kalinka" was created at the "Lenconcert" in the summer of 1971 by Sergei Lavrovsky and Yuri Akulov. Both were previously fond of jazz, Lavrovsky was the drummer and leader of the LITMO Jazz Octet, Akulov played the guitar in The Seven Dixilend, later wrote songs for popular pop artists, while Lavrovsky became the drummer for Singing Guitars. The ensemble's repertoire was based on songs of the peoples of the USSR in modern processing, compositions written by Leningrad authors especially for Kalinka, and works by the VIA members themselves.
