Nicholas Britell (born October 17, 1980, New York City, New York) is an American composer and pianist. He has written soundtracks for films (12 Years a Slave, The Big Short) and television series (Succession and The Underground Railroad). He composed the score for the HBO series Succession (2018–2023) and won the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Opening Credits Music in 2019. He is a three-time Academy Award nominee (Moonlight, If Beale Street Could Talk, and Don't Look Up). In 2013, Britell co-produced the short film Whiplash, directed by Damien Chazelle, and remained on the executive production team for the feature film of the same name, which won three Academy Awards.
