Johann Sebastian Bach was a German composer and musician of the late Baroque, born on 31 March 1685 in Eisenach. During his lifetime, he was known above all as an outstanding organist and clavier virtuoso, while full recognition of his stature as a composer came in the 19th century and has remained exceptionally high ever since. Bach is closely associated with The Well-Tempered Clavier, Book 1, written in the early 1720s as a set of 24 preludes and fugues in all major and minor keys. A beginner can also discover early keyboard works such as the Sonata in D major, BWV 963, dated around 1704. Many listeners and students learn Bach through clear tonal design and masterful structure.
His music belongs to Baroque tradition and includes organ music, sacred music, and instrumental music. Bach is regarded as one of the greatest composers of all time, and his art became a foundation for later European classical music. He brought polyphonic technique, especially in fugues and chorale settings, to an extraordinary level of complexity and expression. The cycle of keyboard sonatas BWV 963–970 is traditionally linked with the clavichord; within it, Presto in D minor, BWV 970, is known as a virtuosic keyboard piece. For beginners, these works open a practical way to play music shaped by counterpoint, form, and expressive rhythm. Even a beginner may learn to hear how Bach balances discipline with imagination.
