Louis Armstrong was an American master of jazz, best known for trumpet and voice. His career spans the 1920s–1960s, with peak popularity in the 1960s. The song What a Wonderful World was written for him and first recorded in 1967. He is also closely linked with Hello, Dolly! and When the Saints Go Marching In.

His styles include jazz, dixieland, trad-jazz, vocal jazz, and pop-jazz. A distinctive rough vocal tone and trumpet sound made him widely recognizable.

He was one of the most influential jazz musicians of the 20th century. What a Wonderful World became an international hit and later gained renewed fame after Good Morning, Vietnam; the recording entered the Grammy Hall of Fame in 1999.
