Belarusian folk music originates from the ancient culture of the Eastern Slavs. The peculiarity of Belarusian folk music is the original folklore of ritual calendar (carols, Maslenitsa, Kupala, harvesting) and family (christening, wedding, etc.) songs. In the Old Russian state, and later in the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, church liturgical music was greatly developed. In the 15th century, a local type of "znamenny chant" was formed in the Belarusian lands; by the 17th century, partisan singing was formed in church Orthodox music. Belarusian musical monuments of that era - collections of works "Polotsk Notebook" and "Chimes".
