Sergei Prokofiev (11 [23] April 1891, Sontsovka - March 5, 1953, Moscow) - Russian and Soviet composer, pianist, conductor, music writer. People's Artist of the RSFSR (1947). The winner of the Lenin Prize (1957) and six Stalin Prizes (1943, 1946 - thrice, 1947, 1952). Prokofiev wrote in all modern genres. He owns 11 operas, 7 ballets, 7 symphonies, 8 concerts for a solo instrument with an orchestra, 9 piano sonatas, oratorios and cantatas, chamber vocal and instrumental compositions, music for cinema and theater. After the Revolution, Prokofiev left Russia with the official blessing of the Soviet minister Anatoly Lunacharsky, and resided in the United States, then Germany, then Paris, making his living as a composer, pianist and conductor.
