Franz Liszt was a Hungarian composer, pianist, and piano virtuoso of the Romantic era. Born in 1811 in the Kingdom of Hungary, he became known in the 19th century, especially from the 1840s to the 1880s. For a beginner, Liszt is a key name to learn through famous works such as Hungarian Rhapsody No. 2, Hungarian Rhapsody No. 4 in E-flat major, and his piano transcription of Lacrimosa from Mozart’s Requiem.
His music joins classical tradition with brilliant virtuosity. Liszt is known for the Hungarian Rhapsodies, symphonic poems, and transcriptions of works by Bach, Beethoven, Berlioz, and Mozart. He was considered the greatest piano virtuoso of his time. Many musicians play his works to explore Romantic style.
